Bumblebees may be much smarter than originally assumed, a new study suggests. The research, published in the journal Science, found that they were able to figure out how to manoeuvre a ball to access a sugary reward, with no previous training. It’s a remarkable result, and even more so when you consider that the puzzle is a variation of one originally meant for chimpanzees. “There’s a certain kind of decisiveness about their actions,” said Juha-Heikki Kantola, a Finnish physicist and one of the study’s authors. “It just leaves you with the feeling that there’s something going on in the brains of these creatures.
